Statement from Mayor Peckford on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

As we commemorate the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and observe Orange Shirt Day, we raise the Every Child Matters flag to honour the Indigenous children taken from their families to residential schools—remembering both the survivors and those who never came home.

The flag’s orange background symbolizes the impact of residential schools, and the eagle feather honors the children forced into these institutions. Together, these symbols convey a powerful message: Every Child Matters.

Orange Shirt Day, inspired by Phyllis Webstad’s story, is a reminder of the trauma endured by Indigenous families and our shared responsibility in the reconciliation process.

In North Grenville, we stand with Indigenous peoples to ensure future generations of Indigenous children thrive in a nation that respects their rights and cultures. Our thanks goes to the Indigenous Advisory Circle and our local Indigenous communities for their leadership in this work. Let’s continue to walk this path together with purpose and commitment.

Thank you.
