Statement from Mayor Nancy Peckford on November 25, International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women

On November 25, 2024, the Municipality of North Grenville stands with communities across the globe to observe the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. Since its inception in 1981, this day has served as a profound call to action—to confront the pervasive issue of gender-based violence, honour the resilience of survivors, and remember those whose lives were tragically cut short.

Gender-based violence transcends borders, impacting people in every community, including here in North Grenville. Women, girls, trans individuals, and marginalized groups continue to bear the disproportionate weight of this violence. As your Mayor, I remain steadfast in my commitment to fostering a community where safety, dignity, and respect are not privileges, but rights for all.

Today, we raise the Leeds and Grenville Interval House Flag at the Municipal Centre. This flag will fly from November 25 to December 10 as part of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, a global campaign aimed at raising awareness and inspiring concrete action to end this injustice.

As we reflect on this solemn day, we are reminded that combating gender-based violence is not just about raising awareness—it’s about taking deliberate, sustained action. We must unite to challenge harmful stereotypes, dismantle systemic barriers, and support the critical work of local organizations that advocate for survivors and empower them to reclaim their lives.

Let this day serve as a powerful declaration that we, as a community, will not tolerate violence or harassment in any form. Let us reaffirm our commitment to creating a future where no one walks in fear, where every individual—regardless of gender or background—can live free from violence and oppression.

Together, we can and will create a North Grenville where equality, safety, and compassion prevail.
