TD and The North Grenville Rainbow Youth Alliance present “The Fruit Machine” by Sarah Fodey.
Q & A afterwards with Martine Roy, TD employee and Purge survivor.
Movie presentation: “The Fruit Machine”. This documentary is about Canada’s policy of surveillance and interrogation of 2SLGBTQIA+ people by thr RCMP during the Cold War. At the time, homosexuality was considered a “character weakness” and LGBT federal employees and Canadian Armed Forces members were, therefore, thought to be susceptible to blackmail by soviet spies.
This documentary draws its name from the machine developed to identify 2SLGBTQIA+ Canada Public Service Employees and CAF members. From the late 1950’s through to early 1990’s, people were interrogated, threatened, manipulated, and dismissed from their careers due to their sexuality. Many suffered psychological effects and some took their own lives. It was on of the largest bullying campaigns in Canada’s History.
